The earliest known collectible of Christy Mathewson is his 1901 Police Gazette supplement. Published by National Police Gazette each supplement was numbered based on the issue number in which it was included which enables the individual 11 1/4"" x 16 1/4" supplements to be dated despite the issue being produced over a sixteen-year period. This example is a variation that does include the tag line underneath Matty's name. Trimmed on all four sides, the piece measures 9 3/8" x 13 7/8" and exhibits some wear including wrinkles and stains and some edge tears, notably at the top right. The reverse is lightly toned, with some clear tape affixed at the top in three areas to repair small tears and pinholes, and one piece of clear tape folded at the center. Still, a very scarce piece in high demand, representing the earliest known collectible of one of the hobby's greats.
