Despite the insistence of grading companies to continue to use the name "Scrapps Tobacco," a company that never existed, we now know that these die-cut cards were actually produced in 1888 by the H.D. Smith Company, packaged with gum. This discovery has been well-documented and was published in the last issue of the Standard Catalog, but SGC and PSA both continue to label these cards with incorrect information.
This example features "Pretzels" Getzen, graded "Authentic - Altered" by PSA due to scrapbook damage on the reverse. Though the edges are worn and the card does exhibit a surface abrasion near Getzin's chin, the card presents well, a colorful example of one of the earliest gum cards ever produced - and not a tobacco card.
