Gabby Hartnett was a Hall of Fame catcher for the Chicago Cubs in the 1920s and ‘30s. He was also a pitchman for Charles Denby Cigars. This lot showcases a colorful, albeit empty, cigar box from the 1930s, one in which Hartnett is shown hawking the popular cigar brand. The 8.5” wide by 2.5” high and 6” deep cigar box shows a smiling Hartnett with a cigar in mouth next to a balloon caption that reads: “What! Only a nickel for this dime flavor? Yes … Charles Denby gives you REAL 10¢ TOBACCO for 5¢.” The genuine cigar box, which shows ample wear and some peeling on the sides, is stamped “H. Fendrich, Inc. of Evansville, Indiana,” the home base for Charles Denby Cigars. The structural integrity of the cigar box remains intact.
