American Tobacco Company Chairman James Duke was hungrily eyeing British tobacco companies as the Twentieth Century came around when four major market players in the UK came together in 1901 to form the Imperial Tobacco Company to fend off his advances; a year later Churchman's joined their growing corporation. Duke would find his American Empire splintered in 1911 and the number of U.S. tobacco card issues slowed to a trickle before stopping completely in 1919. Imperial Tobacco and the British tobacco industry continued on and issued cards for decades after this and 1938 saw a 50 card set of boxing cards come out under the Churchman's brand.
Joe Louis is the subject on the SGC 7 Near Mint beauty seen here. Well-centered with a clear image of the world famous boxer in training, the card has retained its white borders and reverse and corners in-line with the grade. A small half moon indent can be seen in the upper border from the reverse.
