The 1955 baseball season is one of the most memorable and widely-collected today. The season saw a monster 51-home run 127 RBI season from Willie Mays 20-win seasons from both Don Newcombe and Robin Roberts and a tight American League pennant race between the Yankees and Indians that saw the two teams tied in the standings as late as September 16. Most importantly however it saw one of the most dramatic World Series victories in history the Brooklyn Dodgers defeating the Yankees in 7 games with outfielder Sandy Amoros making a game-saving catch on Yogi Berra in the sixth inning. That catch and the 1955 World Series remains the stuff of legend among vintage collectors and New Yorkers nearly 60 years later. Presented is a beautiful Topps baseball set from that year. For all the reasons above as well as for containing the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente Sandy Koufax and Harmon Killebrew the 1955 Topps issue remains one of the company's most popular and desirable. This is a gorgeous mid grade example even the lower-grade cards largely presenting well with mild corner wear and centering (which is consistent with 1950s Topps quality control) being the primary detractors keeping many of the cards from grading higher. This is a beautiful set. Grading 8% EX-MT or better 25% EX 30% VG/EX 27% VG 7% G and 3% lesser the key cards grade as follows: #2 Ted Williams (VG); #4 Al Kaline (VG); #28 Ernie Banks (VG); #31 Warren Spahn (G); #47 Hank Aaron (F - VG appearance with an owner stamp on the reverse); #50 Jackie Robinson (VG); #100 Monte Irvin (VG); #123 Sandy Koufax (SGC GOOD 20 - appears EX but is marred by two small but deep abrasions on the reverse); #124 Harmon Killebrew (SGC EX+ 70); #155 Eddie Mathews (G); #164 Roberto Clemente (PSA EX 5); #189 Phil Rizzuto (VG); #198 Yogi Berra (G); #194 Willie Mays (F); and #210 Duke Snider (VG). The recent VCP value of the three key rookie cards in the set approaches $1 300 alone. This is a beautiful set; an excellent acquisition for a collector looking to obtain an attractive collector-to-midgrade set or a hobbyist looking for a start on a higher-grade set more interested in upgrading key cards than building a set one card at a time. 206 cards total.
