Perhaps the most important modern sportscard set driven by what is arguably the most significant rookie card the hobby has seen in the last 3 decades. The 1986-87 Fleer basketball set was issued at the dawn of the resurgence of the NBA with Michael Jordan well on his way to becoming one of the most popular athletes of all time. Today the 132-card set is one of the most coveted modern sets in collecting with significant rookie and Hall of Famer cards scattered throughout the set. This set was hand-assembled by its consignor a long-time collector of cards and memorabilia from multiple sports. Unfortunately over time the set has become separated from five of its cards most notably the issue's most important: the #57 card of Michael Jordan. Also missing from the set are card #53 (Magic Johnson) #75 (Sidney Moncrief) #91 (Doc Rivers) and #109 (Isaiah Thomas). This set was part of an extremely large collection of cards from multiple eras; like many of us the collector kept his Hall of Famers and key cards separate from the individual sets (which were stored in binders). When it came time to consign this set to Love of the Game the three Hall of Famers listed above were nowhere to be found. The good news is that the missing cards are readily available; many collectors have actually opted to obtain the Jordan separately in lieu of the entire set. This particular collection is very attractive with very few cards below the NMT level. A breakdown of condition is as follows: 41% NM-MT 45% NMT 13% EX-MT with a negligible number of cards at the EX level. The very difficult checklist likely grades on the higher side of EX-MT due to some minor chipping at the bottom edge. The 1986 Fleer basketball set is one of the hobby's most significant modern issues. Despite missing the set's key card this is a tremendous group a near-complete set that is easily completed with readily available cards.
