Wednesday, July 15, 1942, marked the world premiere of the much-anticipated film The Pride of the Yankees (subtitled The Life of Lou Gehrig Story) starring Gary Cooper as Gehrig and Theresa Wright as Eleanor Gehrig, Lou’s wife. Even the great Babe Ruth made an appearance in the film playing himself. The film, which was produced by Samuel Goldwyn and directed by Sam Wood, was released just one year following Gehrig’s tragic passing due to ALS at the age of 37 after his Hall of Fame career with the New York Yankees was cut short by the incurable disease. This collection features an extremely rare original broadside advertising the film's World Premier, a World Premiere program and includes a torn ticket stub from the event which took place at the RKO Metropolitan Theater on 58th Street in New York City. The inside pages of the program reveal a short but powerful introduction written by newspaper columnist and author Damon Runyan describing the film, with the entire cast of the movie identified on the facing page. The program remains in great shape with the torn blue ticket stub stapled to the top left corner of the cover. 3 items total.
