Captured in this studio photo at the beginning of his career shortstop Herman "Germany" Long holds the major league record for most errors in his career. Of all the players who ever played baseball just four committed more than 1 000 errors. Despite this Long was considered an excellent fielder his excellent range enabling him to get to balls many other shortstops would never reach. Author of a 16-year career mostly with the Boston Beaneaters Long retired in 1904 with a lifetime batting average of .277. Card #278-4.
