S.F. Hess of Rochester, New York is best known, quite ironically, as an issuer of cards featuring teams from the California League, which eventually became the more familiar Pacific Coast League. N321, an 1888 release, is a colorful, illustrated blank-backed set of 40 subjects. This is one of three different Smith's (all San Francisco Pioneers) in the set, showing John Smith, who played one season in the burgeoning National League with the Troy Trojans and Worcester Ruby Legs (yup) in 1882. Shown here with the Pioneers a half dozen years later, this SGC 2 has survived with wonderful color and barely any problems on the obverse save for some oh-so slightly tipped corners. Centered, with a period angled top/bottom cut the reverse explains the grade, with some heavy foxing evident but also some ink bleed through from the front. At 135 years young, this is a fine example of a tough card from one of the earliest baseball sets ever made.
