Bill Skiff was a longtime major league scout and a former catcher who recorded his own cup-of-coffee-like tenure in the bigs: 22 games and a .250 batting average playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees. This lot spotlights a Mets-branded cutlery set wooden cutlery box that was awarded to Skiff for his 55 years of dedicated service to Major League Baseball on June 22, 1963, at the Mets Old Timers Day Game. The box measures 18 1/2” wide by 3” tall by 7 1/2” deep and includes a specially engraved plaque to Skiff that’s adorned with the New York Mets logo. The brass plaque shows tarnishing and the box is a bit weathered, with some staining on the lid.  The felt on the bottom is well-worn, with portions worn away over time and the adhesive missing from approximately half (so it has peeled away from the box).  The carving utensils inside do exhibit a light patina but were likely never used, the felt interior of the box a bit musty and faded.
