This may have been one of the league’s longest games on record at that time. It was, in essence, a doubleheader (18 innings), all in one game. On Sept. 5, 1927, in the first game of a true doubleheader at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox outlasted the vaunted New York Yankees in 18 innings, 12-11. The game took four hours and 20 minutes to complete. A pair of Yankees, Earle Combs and Mark Koenig, both got up to bat 10 times each and while they collectively recorded eight hits, it wasn’t enough. Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig even got four hits including a two-run homer, but it still wasn’t enough. The Red Sox, as a team, registered 20 hits, but it was four doubles recorded across the bottom of the 17th and 18th innings off Yankees pitcher Waite Hoyt – New York’s fifth hurler of the game – that proved to be the difference. This lot features a pair of Fenway Park Official Score Card examples from the memorable game. Both measuring 6.25" wide by 10" high, the identical scorecard’s covers are split equally between two advertisers: Regal Shoes and Between the Acts Tobacco. Inside you’ll find the two teams’ lineups with the first scorecard filled out accurately over the first nine innings and the second scorecard detailing the last nine innings. Surrounding the game’s stats are vintage advertisements from the era including Gem Safety Razor Blades, Chesterfield Cigarettes, Old Gold Cigarettes and J.A. Cigars.and G.G.G. Clothes. Both books remain in good condition with their original staples still holding the saddle stitched booklets together.
