Attractive collection of three "batting" poses of the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame infield trio of Joe Tinker Johnny Evers and Frank Chance each graded VG 40 by SGC. It was in 1910 that newspaper columnist and sports columnist Franklin Pierce Adams wrote the poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon." The poem was presented from the point of view of a New York Giants fan watching the Cubs infield turn a double play. It is often stated that the poem helped get the players inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946. After the initial poem was written additional verses were added. The original verse however was written as follows: These are the saddest of possible words: "Tinker to Evers to Chance." Trio of bear cubs and fleeter than birds Tinker and Evers and Chance. Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble Making a Giant hit into a double- Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble: "Tinker to Evers to Chance." The poem remains immensely popular today joining the three players - who in reality did not get along - together in history and also in this group of cards. Each graded VG 40 by SGC with a variety of minor flaws contributing to the grade each also retains strong visual appeal along with a similar backdrop that helps the cards present well together. An exceptional grouping recalling an unforgettable piece of baseball verse.
