Interesting display with a dark twist.  July 10, 1934 in the town of North Brookfield, Mass was, according to the program in this display, was Connie Mack Day.  Advertising the event, along with MC George M. Cohan (a well-known entertainer and Vaudeville performer), one might be led to believe that the city was honoring the great Athletics manager.

The reality of the event was a bit darker.  Mack and Cohen both hailed from the North Brookfield area, as did a third well-known figure: former ballplayer Marty Bergen.  Bergen is well-known among deadball era collectors as a player who suffered with mental illness, and ultimately murdered his wife and children, before brutally taking his own life.  In 1934, Mack and Cohan - both friendly with Bergen - helped raise funds to construct a monument to Bergen at his gravesite.  July 10, 1934 was the date chosen to dedicate the monument to Bergen.

For the "festivities," Cohan asked Mack if he could bring his Philadelphia Athletics to play an exhibition game against a team of local stars.  The game was broadcast on NBC, with Cohan providing play-by-play.  Six thousand people attended, and because of the baseball theme, it became known as "Connie Mack Day," a way of whitewashing the true purpose of the event.

Presented here is a handsome framed display, measuring approximately 12 1/2" x 28".  Displayed behind matting is the program from the day, a Garbaty card of Gohan, and a signed photo of Mack with Jimmie Dykes.  An interesting display, featuring a well-known entertainer, a Hall of Fame manager, with a dark twist.  Full LOA from PSA/DNA for the signed photo.
