An attractive specimen of one of the hobby's most iconic cards the T206 Red Background portrait card of Tigers Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. One of the most famous players ever to set foot on a field Cobb was simultaneously admired and disliked by most of baseball during his playing days and is respected today for his aggressive style of play (and his 4 000 career hits). This card likely the most common of the four Cobb cards issued by the American Tobacco Company between 1909 and 11 is also one of his most popular the large supply seemingly never impacting demand. This example has been graded VG 40 by SGC due to corner wear as well as soiling throughout the card. The registration and image quality however is outstanding - the deep red background accentuates the portrait which is printed remarkably clearly and with tremendous quality. An outstanding example for the grade. Population Data SGC Population: 114 total graded 21 at this level 26 higher* PSA Population: 278 total graded 34 at this level 101 higher* *Please note that PSA just recently began to differentiate between T206 back variations in their population reports so it is entirely possible that other examples of this card may have been graded by PSA and classified in their pop reports as "unknown back." Additionally the SGC population reports make note of a significant number of graded Sweet Caporal T206 Cobb cards where the pose is not classified. It is very likely that a percentage of these cards is the Red Background portrait card.
