Interesting letter from pitcher Carl Mays to "Bill," promoting his forthcoming book The Busher from Boise. Full LOA from JSA. The submarining Mays famously threw the 1920 pitch that killed Ray Chapman of Cleveland, the only major league death caused by a thrown pitch. Mays had an excellent career, posting a 207-126 record with a 2.92 lifetime ERA in 15 major league seasons. He had a reputation of being a headhunter with a quick temper, and was even accused of conspiring with gamblers to fix a game. While we can find no reference to a book with this title, or any book written by Mays, a 1972 book entitled Baseball's Great Tragedy by Bob McGarigle did include contributions from Mays, who died in the spring of 1971. The letter is handwritten on Mays' personal letterhead, in a shaky hand, the signature clear and legible. LOA from James Spence Authentication.
