Measuring 4.25 x 7 inches, this "quad" uncut panel represents one-quarter of the set that was the first Topps football issue. Wehn cut, these were tiny, postage stamp sized novelties, meant to be inserted between the wrappers of a penny piece of Topps Varsity Gum (a sister of issue of Bazooka) and are hyper-condition sensitive as individual cards. With the NFL out of reach at the time, Topps went with 100 college players for their set. Red was one of five colors used, with 25 cards assigned per color (yellow and brown shared the same subjects).
Featuring Charlie Justice, a 1961 College Football Hall of Fame enshrinee who played four seasons in the NFL with Washington, and three other players who saw time in the league (Lou Allen, Gary Kerkorian and Art Weiner), this Red 5 x 5 panel is a vintage rarity. Hand cut, with some nicks around the edges, and a crease seen in the lower left, the player images are all strong, as is the crimson backdrop. The reverse, with 25 "fuzzy" college pennants (the "Felt" in the commonly used hobby parlance) is in similar shape. A real blast from the past, this would make a fine display case or framed desktop item for the dedicated football collector
