Despite being one of the more frequently encountered Hall of Famers in the N172 issue, Buck Ewing is also one of the era's most popular and widely-collected players. Arguably the best player of the 19th Century, his immense popularity makes the demand for his cards consistently strong. In the late teens, a reporter asked none other than Connie Mack - who had, by that point, seen Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Nap Lajoie and Joe Jackson - who the best player he'd ever seen was. His answer? Buck Ewing.
This example, card #149-6, pictures Ewing in a less frequently-seen pose, the card freshly graded VG+ 3.5 by PSA. As is the case with several N172s featured in this auction, mild soiling on the reverse impacts the technical grade; the card front appears very strong with only mild corner wear and moderate fading to the image. A strong example, one of just eight of this pose graded by PSA with just two higher.
