"Rip" Radcliff finished the 1933 season with a .364 batting average in 511 at bats with the St. Paul Saints moving to the Louisville Colonels in 1934. That would be his final minor league season preaching into the majors in 1934 as a rookie outfielder with the White Sox. His 10 year major league career would yield a .311 batting average but that is not for what Radcliff became best known. It was in May of 1941 that Radcliff then with the failing St. Louis Browns was sold to the Detroit Tigers. Radcliff's role was to take the place of Hank Greenberg who was the first American League player to be drafted into military service. Radcliff was the replacement for the great Hank Greenberg who served longer in the war than any other player.
