Don Mueller was a catalyst for the 1951 Giants stretch run that culminated in the Shot Heard 'Round The World. True to his nickname of "Mandrake the Magician", Mueller took a ball the opposite way through a hole in the Dodgers infield in the bottom of the ninth of the final playoff game in 1951 and gained first while pushing Alvin Dark over to third. On the next play, Whitely Lockman doubled in Dark and Mueller tore up his ankle sliding into third base and was removed for a pinch runner. He was assisted into the clubhouse and was in the trainer's room when Thomson bashed the famous home run, a footnote to history.
His horizontally aligned 1952 Topps card shows off his stance in spring training on a PSA 4 graded card. He's signed it in blue Sharpie, which has earned a PSA/DNA GEM MINT designation. Surely one of the finest signed 1952 Topps Don Mueller cards in existence.
