Fascinating 6" x 8" news service photo depicting Cleveland Spiders hurler, Denton True "Cy" Young, the winningest pitcher in Major League Baseball history and member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 1937 (the second induction class in history) along with John McGraw, Napoleon Lajoie, Connie Mack, Tris Speaker and George Wright. Remaining a vintage example, the presented photograph has been developed from a duplicate negative sometime during the 1920's and features what is likely the earliest image of the future Hall of Famer in a major league uniform. This rookie-era depiction of Young first appeared on an extremely rare 1891 cabinet photo issued by John H. Ryder's studio of Cleveland, OH (which is not included but we have shown for reference purposes). A small piece of the lower-left corner has chipped away, otherwise the photographic print remains in Excellent condition with typical light handling wear associated with working press photos from this era. Verso includes small paper caption referencing Young's early history with the Cleveland Spiders and "Wide World Photos Cleveland Bureau" credit stamping appears at center. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type 4 photo by PSA/DNA.
