While many collectors believe the strip card sets produced by M.P. & Co in 1943 and 1949 are among the least attractive card issues ever produced, there is a certain appeal to the colorfully-illustrated cards when in more attractive condition. The 1943 set also has the distinction of being the only nationally-issued card set to be distributed during World War II. Originally thought to be generic player illustrations, an astute collector on the Net54 Baseball message board has tied many of the illustrations to original photographs, proving that they're not generic illustrations, they're just bad ones, hardly resembling the player they are intended to. Regardless, a complete set of 24 cards on their original eight-card strips is represented here, framed to a finished size of approximately 24" x 14 1/2". The frame features double-sided glass so the reverse of the cards can be viewed. The strips are prone to slipping inside the matted area as a result, as evidenced in the photo. Each strip is sharp and clean, with the occasional light wrinkle here and there. Unfortunately the glass does not appear to have been UV protective, resulting in even but noticeable fading to the blue and green coloration of the strips. Still, an attractive grouping, featuring many Hall of Famers and early cards of the likes of Joe Medwick, Nee Wee Reese, Joe Cronin, Joe DiMaggio, Johnny Mize, Red Ruffing, Carl Hubbell, Hank Greenberg, Lou Boudreau, Ted Williams, Jimmy Foxx, Bob Feller, Mel Ott and Bill Dickey.
