The 1960 Fleer "Baseball Greats" set is an interesting issue featuring Fleer's idea of the 79 (80, counting a variety of #80 cards that have surfaced over the years) greatest players in the game.  Certainly many of them were included, like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson.  The set also contained some dubious choices, however, like Marty Marion, Bing Miller and Paul Derringer - excellent players, for sure, but certainly not among the all-time greats.  The set was issued this way, of course, because Fleer's chief competitor (Topps) possessed a monopoly on active players.  Featuring retired players was Fleer's only option when it came to producing trading cards.  The set was not commercially successful and while Fleer continued to produce cards of retired players in 1961, this was not a successful tactic for the company.  Today, the issue makes a nice set of the game's greats.  Loaded with Hall of Famers, this is an excellent way for a collector to obtain a set of cards featuring all-time greats, and the issue has been known to be a japing-off point for novice collectors, an entry-level set for collectors looking to learn about prewar baseball.  This is an attractive midgrade complete set of 79 cards (missing the rare card #80, which the set is usually considered complete without), the primary condition flaws relating to centering, as the cards are notoriously found off-center.  Some, of course, do exhibit some signs of handling, mostly at the corners, with the occasional slight wrinkle.  A condition breakdown would be 1% NM, 8% EX/MT, 33% EX, 46% VG/EX, 9% VG, and 3% GOOD or lesser.  A classic set featuring some of the greatest players ever to take the field.  79 cards total.
