Issued in conjunction with the more well-known T3 baseball cabinets, the T9 boxers form a distinct subset mixed in with the baseball players in the original 75 subject checklist. First offered as premiums in 1910, the original 75 subjects were quite obviously expanded by one subject, Jack Johnson, sometime after the famous "Fight of the Century" between Johnson and the retried heavyweight champ James Jeffries.  Johnson, a black man, was thought to have no chance against Jeffries but dominated in a fifteen round technical knock out. and the result was a sensation, with riots breaking out across the country. The good folks at Turkey Red clearly took notice and out popped this premium.

PSA has reviewed 64 of these with just ten grading out higher than this 4, none higher than a PSA 5. Unmarred by any pinholes, as are often seen with these, there is some corner wear to the frame, which is typical.  The image of Johnson is colorful and strong, with fine detail. The reverse has some light foxing and discoloration but remains attractive. High grade for the issue, with fantastic eye appeal and a backstory that made history, this would make a grand addition to any boxing collection.
