New York Giants ace Christy Mathewson winds up at the Polo Grounds in this choice 4.5” x 6” news service photo from Brown Brothers. Research has revealed this image could only have been captured at the very start of the 1911 season, or immediately prior. This is due to a fire that destroyed the wooden grandstand following the Giants' second contest, for which Mathewson was the starting pitcher. That grandstand is clearly visible behind Matty here, who is sporting his Giants team-issued sweater, the details of which are clearly visible due to sharp focus of the image. Minimal wear is visible to the top-right corner of this photo and light toning is present on verso. Verso also displays four different Brown Brothers stamps along with handwritten notations in pencil. Encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
