Portrait photo of Hall of Famer "Cap" Anson, boasting a reasonably strong image on a card typically found with considerable fading. This example has been graded VG 3 by SGC, exhibiting some slight fading near the top half of the card, along with some overall soiling and corner wear consistent with the grade. Checklisted as card #11-1 in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) by Miller, Gonsowski and Masson (an absolutely essential tool, we might add, one of the most important and interesting works the hobby has ever produced), there are actually multiple versions of this card, with the variations lying in the typography. Several examples exist with Anson's name and team affiliation across his breast, as does this one, with others depicting the name and team affiliation typeset at the bottom of the card. While certainly not rare, the portrait card of Cap Anson remains one of the most desirable cards in the entire N172 Old Judge issue.
