A fantastic document of the "passing of the torch" for Yankee legends this late-1930s autograph album page has been signed by both Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio along with underrated third baseman Red Rolfe. As all three players were teammates between 1936 and 1939 it can be surmised that this page was obtained by a lucky autograph-seeker during that period but it would only be after 1939 that its significance became known. Gehrig of course began to feel the deteriorating effects of his illness during the 1938 season and could only muster 33 plate appearances in eight games in 1939 before ALS would force him out of the game. DiMaggio however was blossoming as "The Yankee Clipper " hitting .381 with 30 home runs in that 1939 season winning the MVP award and leading the Yankees to a World Series sweep over Cincinnati. In hindsight this piece represents a monumental period in Yankees history when they would begin to endure the loss of their team Captain while heralding the arrival of a new superstar who would lead the team into the next decade. While the album page itself bears the marks of being removed from its autograph book along with some general but inconsequential wear the signatures are sharp and legible. Gehrig's signature was slightly smudged likely by his own hand but remains vivid and dark. The DiMaggio and Rolfe signatures are similarly bold though the DiMaggio signature is somewhat lighter than the other two. While there is some overlap between the signatures they present extremely well. An impressive piece recalling the Yankee dominance of the early 20th Century including the signatures of two of the most legendary figures ever to play the game.
