Original 5" x 7" Goodwin & Co. glass plate negative emanating from the "Vermont Find." Pitcher Harry Whiteacre (sometimes misspelled Whitacre) is pictured with the 1888 Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association. At least three "Whitacre" poses appear in the 1888 N172 Old Judge series with identical backgrounds to the presented negative, yet this pose is not known to have been used on a cardThis image is also identical to a cabinet photograph we sold in our Fall 2021 sale (lot #207).

Worthy of note is that Whiteacre appears in Joseph Hall's team cabinet photograph (spelled "Whitaker") of the 1888 Philadelphia Athletics though he never made the Athletics regular season roster and cannot be found listed on baseballreference.com. Further confusion in the hobby has stemmed from the fact that his portrait mistakenly appears on the baseballreference.com profile page for Pat Whitaker, who enjoyed a cup of coffee with the 1888 and 1889 Baltimore Orioles.

A striking image of Whiteacre captured in the highest possible quality. Both the glass and emulsion sides of this negative are impressively clean though paper labels have been affixed along the top edges of both sides.
