Gorgeous St. Louis Browns team postcard as issued in 1908 by General Photo of St. Louis. The photo pictures the members of the ballclub in cold-weather gear including heavy (and quite snazzy) coats. Pictured in the top row, third from left, is Hall of Famer Rube Waddell. Hall of Famer Bobby Wallace is visible in the front row, far left. The card originates from the collection of former Browns pitcher Barney Pelty (front row, second from left), injured for much of 1908 but still posting an ERA of 1.99 in 122 innings. This card was mailed to Pelty in April of 1908, a handwritten note to the right of the image reading "Barney you are shure there. Keep going. Yours, Palfrey."
As pointed out to us by an astute collector, Palfrey is photographer Garnett Palfrey, who shot a number of the Pelty photos and real photo postcards featured in this auction.
The card has been graded PR 1 by SGC, due to the writing and postal use. The card presents extremely well, though, the image clean and crisp, with a few minor surface abrasions from being in the postal system. An outstanding card, featuring two Hall of Famers, consigned from the estate of one of the team's players.
