In 1923, Arch Ward, sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, came up with the idea of a citywide amateur boxing tournament, and gained a sponsorship from the paper in 1927. The tournament was held between Chicago and New York. The inter-city Golden Gloves tournament took place from 1928 through 1961. Many amateur Golden Gloves participants went on to become professional boxers.
Presented here is the Inter-City Golden Gloves program from 1940. Measuring just shy of 4" x 6 1/2", the tri-fold program features a young Sugar Ray Robinson, who would win the New York Golden Gloves lightweight championship that year.
The program is in VG/EX condition, with some mild corner and edge wear, and a very slightly irregular fold. Still, an outstanding memento from early in the career of one of the great members of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
