Former St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh catcher Heinie Peitz posed for photographer Charles Conlon at the Polo Grounds for this outstanding 1912 portrait. The stoic Peitz is pictured here during his lone season as Cincinnati Reds bench coach — becoming the very first such coach in team history. Tonal contrast of the presented 8" x 10" photograph is exceptional though light creasing is present to the top left and right corners of the paper. There is a large chip to the lower left edge and a small chip to the lower left corner where the Reds figural “C” is just creeping into the image. Verso includes Charles Conlon’s stamping and handwritten player identification with inscription noting Peitz as an “Old Time Catcher.” Light toning common to these photos is present, especially along the right edge. This photo is fresh to the hobby and originates from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where it has been stored for several decades until this offering. Guaranteed Type 1.
