Journeyman pitcher Ed "Cannonball" Crane got his nickname due to his penchant for being a hard thrower winning four games in the 1889 Giants championship series with Brooklyn. Crane's early career was marked by considerable success on the mound but excessive food and drink got the best of him as his career progressed and he was out of baseball in his early 30s dying by his own hand at just 31 years old.
