Kahn's Wiener's started issuing cards of Cincinnati Redlegs players in 1955 as a promotional handout then a year later inserted them in packs of their hot dogs. By 1957 they had decided to expand their distribution and began including players from the Pittsburgh Pirates. As you can imagine, this in pack promotion led to all sorts of condition problems, which taken together with limited distribution in both time and place, a hugely popular HOF'er in Clemente, plus being part of a long-running regional issue, today results in an interesting nexus of collector desire and interest. In 1957 Roberto Clemente began a nine year run in their sets and PSA has graded a mere 38 examples of this card. Compare that to the almost 5,500 examples of his 1957 Topps card they have seen! Featuring the unmistakable outlines of the hot dogs it was sold with, this card features a real nice B&W shot of the talented young Bucco outfielder. This PSA 3 is qualified with pencil markings on the reverse.
