Ardent baseball fans often spend hours discussing the game's "unbreakable" records often landing at Cy Young's 511 victories and Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak as the two least likely to be broken. Near the top of any list however needs to be Johnny Vander Meer's improbable 1938 record of two consecutive no-hitters. The first of the two games played at home in Cincinnati saw Vander Meer blank the Boston Braves by a 3-0 margin. Just four days later Vander Meer's Reds ventured into Brooklyn where he continued the streak pitching nine more no-hit innings against the Dodgers in the first night game ever played at Ebbets Field. More incredible was the fact that the no-hitters came amidst an incredible streak of quality performances from the young pitcher: in seven starts between May 20 and June 19 Vander Meer pitched seven consecutive complete games with three shutouts never gave up more than one run per game and scattered just 22 hits in 59 innings pitched. The intense media coverage eventually got to Vander Meer who despite accumulating a nine-game winning streak during the season finished the season just 15-10. Among the media coverage was a full-page story in Life Magazine featuring two pictures of the Cincinnati southpaw (born in New Jersey we might add) along with a beautiful photo of Ebbets Field under the lights. Vander Meer signed this particular example in black Sharpie directly on the Ebbets Field photo. The piece displays wonderfully with a long diagonal scrape of about two inches an upper-left corner grease and normal age-related edge wear marring the condition but not the aesthetic appeal. *Please note that this item is guaranteed by Love of the Game to pass authentication from one of the hobby's three major autograph authenticators: James Spence Authentication PSA/DNA or SGC Authentic.
