Right fielder Elmer Smith was the author of a ten-year major league career, playing with five different teams and amassing a .276 lifetime batting average. His finest seasons were 1920 and 1921, when he starred with Cleveland, batting .316 with 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 1920, following up with a .290 average with 16 home runs and 85 RBI in 1921. Smith is best known for hitting the first grand slam in World Series history, off Hall of Famer Burleigh Grimes in Game 5 of the 1920 series. He was subsequently traded to Boston, and would play with three times in the ensuing four seasons before moving to the PCL, where he played until he was nearly 40.
This uncatalogued Exhibit card pictures Smith with Cleveland, likely issued between 1920 and 1923. His 1922 Exhibit card is the only checklist example; this specimen has been graded POOR 1 by SGC, marked as "Uncatalogued." An interesting card, classifying Smith as only "B.B. Player."
