One of the more interesting variations in the T206 issue relates to some Piedmont and Sweet Caporal cards of Bud Sharpe.  On a small number of the cards, the name "SHARPE" is missing the lower leg in the letter "R," creating the name "SHAPPE."  Similar in nature to the "Nodgrass" error, the Shappe card is a recognized variation within the T206 issue, and yet a variation that is not without controversy.  Recognizing the potential for increased dollars on sales of an otherwise common card, nefarious card doctor types begin experimenting with ways of removing the lower leg of the "R" on ordinary Sharpe cards, and a few such alterations unfortunately made it through and into grading company holders.  This example was assessed by SGC at the peak of their prewar prowess, a strong, midgrade example, certainly one of the mode attractive of the known "Shappe" variations.
