Sensational 4" x 5" original glass plate negative depicting Babe Ruth posed with a young boy and four bats at the Polo Grounds. Though this c.1920 image originates from an unknown photographer the content is a wonderful vignette evoking one of The Babe's most endearing qualities - his love for children. Ruth, a troublesome child, famously spent almost 12 years of his life at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys (age 7-18) and it was there that his love for baseball was fostered. Throughout his career Ruth was known to be especially generous with his time for children - signing autographs, playing sandlot ball, scheduling visits with orphans, and eventually setting up The Babe Ruth Foundation before his death to help aid underprivileged youth. The presented one-of-a-kind glass plate negative remains in fantastic condition overall, though the emulsion exhibits silver mirroring which has created an artistic halo effect around the central image. There is minor emulsion loss around the edges which is most apparent along the right side. Our research indicates this negative emerged from the Culver Pictures Archive which first became available at public auction in 2015.
