Terrific news service photo featuring New York Yankees manager, Bob Shawkey shaking hands with his first manager in the major leagues, Connie Mack. Mack signed Shawkey to his Philadelphia Athletics squad of 1911 where he remained until 1915 before being shipped to the New York Yankees mid-season. Shawkey endured with New York until 1927 and took the mound as Opening Day starter for the very first game at the new Yankee Stadium in 1923 (a complete game victory). Of course, the Yankees would capture their very first World Series championship later that season. In 1930 Shawkey took the reigns as Yankees manager following the sudden death of Miller Huggins, though it proved to be his only season as skipper of the club.

6.5" x 8.5" photograph boasts nearly perfect tonal range and presents beautifully though a chipped lower right corner, pinholes and several crop marks appear within the white borders. Just a hint of the crop marks sneak onto the central image and there is a piece of clear tape affixed at the very top of this photo. Verso includes remnants of a paper caption and a May 17, 1930 date stamp appears along with handwritten editorial notations. This photo is fresh to the hobby and originates from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where it has been stored for several decades until this offering. Guaranteed Type 1.
