Nearly a career minor leaguer, Buddy Ryan led the Pacific Coast League with 23 home runs in 1911 and got a taste of the majors when he premiered for the Cleveland Naps in 1912, ultimately fading out one season later. Over the course of 166 games in the bigs Ryan roamed the outfield alongside superstar Shoeless Joe Jackson but the power he exhibited in the PCL never materialized. Despite any shortcomings as a major leaguer, Buddy Ryan was inducted into the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame in 2004. Charles Conlon captured this superb full-body image of Ryan at Hilltop Park during the 1912 campaign shortly before the ballpark closed it's doors and the Highlanders joined the Giants as tenants of the Polo Grounds. This 8" x 10" photo is a fine example of Charles Conlon's work and the photo presents exceptionally well with a clean surface and barely a hint of wear aside from creasing in the extreme upper left corner. Verso is mostly clean aside from minor smudging in the upper right corner and "John" written in modern ballpoint at the top. Charles Conlon's personal stamp appears along with Conlon's handwritten identification of Ryan. Photo is fresh to the hobby and originates from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where it has been stored for several decades until this offering. Guaranteed Type 1.
