Devoted exclusively to theatrical and sporting news, the New York Clipper published beginning in 1853 and ran through 1923.  Beginning in the April 12, 1879 issue, the publication began producing woodcut illustrations of baseball players which ran through their May 15, 1880 issue.  Each individual woodcut image measures approximately 4 1/2" x 5 3/4" with the player's name and position listed underneath, along with some biographical information.

The June 21, 1879 edition edition of the Clipper included the 11th baseball woodcut, of Levi S. Meyerle.  "Long Levi" played for eight pro seasons between 1871 and 1884, described in his biographical information as first baseman for the Washington Nationals (of the National Association).  The paper is intact, measuring 12 1/4" x 17 1/4", the image of Meyerle strong, with a fold running north to sound consistent with the fold of a newspaper.  The paper itself does exhibit some tiny edge tears, an imperfect fold and some minor creasing and wrinkling that one would expect with a newspaper of this age.  Also included is a 1984 booklet authored by hobby icon Lew Lipset entitled New York Clipper Woodcuts, an informational piece which lists each of the baseball woodcuts to have appeared in the Clipper, along with images of each, to get you on your way with your new collecting passion.
