Spectacular and historically important cover of the November 9 1889 issue of Harper's Weekly featuring a gorgeous image of Hall of Fame catcher Buck Ewing. Ewing wears his chest protector carrying his mask in one hand and his catcher's glove in the other standing in front of a packed grandstand. Ewing captain of the championship 1889 Giants was drawn by Swedish illustrator Thure de Thulstrup who worked extensively with Harper's Weekly for three decades. The piece appears in VG/EX condition due to some light notching at the edges a tiny bit of paper loss at the top left corner and top edge and some light edge toning. Still one of the more important and desirable of all the baseball woodcuts.
