Elaborate cardboard advertising countertop display featuring an adjustable baseball scorer and promoting Canadian Ace ale. The Canadian Ace Brewery was originally called the Manhattan Brewing Company until it was sold in 1919 to Johnny Torrio and Al Capone. In attempt to "clean up" its image the company changed its name to Canadian Ace just prior to Capone's death in 1947. The 11" x 17 1/2" heavy cardboard sign was likely produced during that time and was designed for a retailer to draw crowds by updating the score regularly (and to use a special crayon that was provided with the piece which has long been separated from this one). The colorful display features a figure at the bottom who actually bears some resemblence to Capone. The piece does exhibit some staining and wear notably at the corners. The top right corner has been repaired with masking tape on the reverse; significant creasing is notable at the two left corners. Despite this the display characteristics are strong. A seldom-seen and very interesting advertising display with quite an interesting backsstory.
