Attractive red white and blue official program from the fifth annual All-Star Game this one played in 1937 at Griffith Stadium in Washington DC. The American League took the game 8-3 Lefty Gomez besting Dizzy Dean Lou Gehrig blasting a home run for the AL. The game is less memorable for what happened during the game than what happened afterward. From 1932 through 1937 Dizzy Dean had been one of the league's most durable pitchers averaging more than 300 innings pitched per season. His dominant performance down the stretch in the 1934 pennant race is the stuff of baseball legend seemingly pitching every day and winning 30 games. In the 1937 All-Star game Dean took a line drive off the bat of Earl Averill that broke his toe. In an effort to continue pitching through the injury during the season Dean altered his pitching motion to ease the pain on his toe - and in the process hurt his arm. His career was never the same after that lasting just four more seasons and never throwing more than 96 innings in a single campaign. The program has been signed by both Dean and Averill on interior pages as well as by Hall of Famer Joe Cronin. An incredibly significant program given how it relates to the ending of Dizzy Dean's legendary career. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
