In 1910 the actual nickname of the Chillicothe Babes of the Ohio State League was the Infants; they officially adopted the "Babes" name in 1913. Regardless their roster included Philadelphia native Ed Irwin who went by the name of "Bill" Irwin a journeyman catcher who began his pro career right in Kingston New York hometown of Love of the Game Auctions with the Kingston Colonels. In 1912 Irwin responded to an advertisement in the Philadelphia Press looking for "two husky backstops" to help warm up the Phillies pitchers. Irwin was hired and remained with the Phillies until May. In Mid-May Tigers star Ty Cobb was suspended by Ban Johnson indefinitely for attacking a fan. In response to the banishment Tigers players went on strike and to avoid forfeiting a May 18 game against the Athletics the Tigers recruited a group of amateur players to field a team. The team of scrubs were beated by the Athletics 24-2 causing Johnson to threaten the striking Tigers with permanent banishment. Irwin played for the Tigers in that game making his major league debut as a 30-year-old third baseman. He game to the plate three times hitting two triples and striking out once his final lifetime batting average of .667 earning him a space in the Baseball Encyclopedia. A tremendous story.
