An extremely rare issue the Yum Yum Tobacco brand was manufactured by the August Beck Company of Chicago. The cards are among the most rare 19th Century issues and are highly coveted by advanced collectors. Due to their extreme rarity condition is a non-factor with these cards and the player on the card is also typically unimportant as simply acquiring any card in any grade from the set is usually sufficient for most collectors looking to acquire one. With only a hundred or so graded examples known the set includes both photographic portraits and illustrations promotes Yum Yum brand smoking and chewing tobacco and features players from the eight National League teams plus the Brooklyn Grays of the American Association. The checklist from the unnumbered set currently includes 61 cards but will likely grow as new examples are discovered. Only a few examples of each subject are known to exist and each one attracts significant demand among collectors when one arises at public auction. Presented here is an extraordinary example from the issue featuring Hall of Famer John Clarkson. The card boasts the extraordinary grade of VG/EX 4 one of only ten cards from the issue to attain that grade with only 14 higher. The extreme rarity of the issue extends to condition; high-grade examples are simply impossible to find. The fact that such an extraordinary example exists that pictures a Hall of Famer is even more outstanding. The card does exhibit light wear around the edges and corners with some mild fading of the image and slight soiling on the reverse. An exceptional card.
