For several years during our friendship with Ted Patterson this colorful baseball game featuring the likeness and endorsement of Walter Johnson sat on display in his basement bar a wonderful room filled with advertising display materials autographed baseballs and game-used apparel. A reasonably common item hobby-wise it almost didn't register with us amidst all the amazing items around it. When preparing our Fall 2019 auction we earmarked the game to be a part of that catalog but it wasn't until we set the box aside for photography purposes that we discovered what made the game special - Walter Johnson's autograph applied across his arm! Advertised as "Next Best to the Real Game " the game itself is a simple dice-driven game with small game pieces and a special spinning top to determine the outcome of "plays." Most of the components of the game are missing; a few score sheets and the rarely-found inspector's voucher are present and the playing surface is clean. As is the case with most surviving examples the box is well-worn with many tears and weak areas along with several pronounced surface creases. The signature applied in steel-tip fountain pen does exhibit some fading yet is clearly legible and visible on the box. One of only a handful of signed examples of which we are aware an exceptional collectible an officially-endorsed game signed by the "Big Train."
