Smith is best known for her rendition of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" which was played in ballparks nationwide after 9/11 during the 7th inning stretch. Smith who passed away in 1986 had her name embroiled in controversy earlier this year as it was discovered that Smith had several songs in her catalog that contained objectionable lyrics. As a result most teams have stopped playing her rendition of the Irving Berlin classic.
