1918 Letter from August Herrmann of the Natioanal Commission to Ban Johnson specifically regarding the planned playing of the World Series in 1918 ostensibly due to the war. Dated July 31 the letter stats "I can not for a moment believe that the Government will in any way object to our attitutde. If they do we can change our plans in accordance with their wishes in a few days." Ultimately the Series was played in early September the "Work or Fight" order issued by the government causing the regular season to end on September 1. During Game 1 the band played "The Star Spangled Banner " which would eventually become a regular pregame feature of sporting events. The Series was won by the Boston Red Sox their last Series until 2004. The letter is in VG condition with some light discoloration at the edges along with some ink smudges at the bottom right along with very light smudges here and there. THe signature is strong and clear with authentication from James Spence Authentication.
