2019 is a significant baseball anniversary year both good and bad. On one hand it marks the 100th anniversary of the Black Sox Scandal. On another much better hand it marks the 50th Anniversary of the New York Mets' "Amazin' Mets" World Series victory. Assigned to the newly-created National League East the Mets had been a second-division team for its entire seven-year history losing at least 100 games in five and never having played higher than .500 baseball after the ninth game of any of their previous seasons. The Mets played the first international game in baseball history against the expansion Montreal Expos and opened the season with a 9-14 record. The team continued streaky play through May until a late-month winning streak of 11 consecutive games. The team continued its streaky play finding themselves 10 games back as late as August 14 before winning 24 of their 32 last games overtaking the Chicago Cubs and winning the division. Inexplicably the team went on to sweep the Atlanta Braves in the Leavue Championship series and then faced the mighty Baltimore Orioles in the World Series winning in five games. Led by the offensive punch of Cleon Jones and Tommie Agee and outstanding pitching from Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman Casey Stengel's "Amazin' Mets" were likely the most improbable champion in baseball history and remain one of the game's most beloved teams.
