In 1947 five Pacific Coast League teams - the Hollywood Stars Los Angeles Angels Oakland Oaks Sacramento Solons and Seattle Rainiers - participated in a promotion with Signal Gasoline stations giving away postcard-sized cards of players in each town. The cards featuring artwork drawn by former ballplayer Al Demaree (designer of the 1939 baseball centennial stamps featured elsewhere in this auction) features an illustration of each player with personal highlights surrounding the illustration similar to the second series in the 1938 Goudey issue. For whatever reason cards of certain teams are more difficult to obtain than others notably the Sacramento Solons and Seattle Rainers. Incorrectly identified in our printed catalog as a "Seattle Rainiers Collection " this grouping of cards each comes from the series issued of the Hollywood Stars. Collection includes Ed Albosta Fred Haney Jack Sherman and Fred Vaughn. Each card grades approximately VG/EX some llight discoloration evident on the reverse of the Sherman card and some visible surface wear on the back of the Albosta card. Four attractive examples from a PCL issue that is seen less frequently than many of the era.
