The 1913 New York Giants finished the season with a 101-51 record under Hall of Fame manager John McGraw good enough for first place in the NL 12 1/2 games ahead of the second place Phillies. Despite the dominance the team was defeated in five games by Connie Mack's A's (and Chief Bender who won 21 games despite starting only 21). Still any of McGraw's Giants teams were loaded with talent and an enormous part of baseball history and 1913 was no exception. Led by Hall of Fame pitchers Christy Mathewson and Rube Marquard the team also featured such venerable names as Jim Thorpe Chief Meyers Fred Merkle Buck Herzog Red Murray Fred Snodgrass Jeff Tesreau Doc Crandall and Larry Doyle. This panoramic photo framed to a finished size of 23 1/2" x 11 1/2" is the finest example of this photo that we have seen with spectacular image quality and very little apparent wear. While the frame prevents us from examining the edges or reverse we can detect a slightly uneven cut at the bottom-right corner perhaps indicative of a very small tear which can only be seen upon extremely close inspection. Aside from that minor blemish the photo is sensational clear and crisp with outstanding aesthetic appeal. It should be noted that this photo differs slightly from the other examples of this photo that we have encountered in that the bottom-left corner advertises Peter Doelger First Prize Bottled Beer. The original Peter Doelger Brery opened in 1859 and continued under different names and different management until 1947. The First Prize brand was brewed both before and after Prohibition and it is likely that this photo was used as some sort of premium. While we have seen and handled examples of this photo none have included this Peter Doelger advertisement. An outstanding seldom seen photo featuring both Christy Mathewson and Jim Thorpe.
